91 YEAR OLD BRONKA HIKES TO CAMP MUIR ON MOUNT. RAINIER

On Wednesday June 29, 2016 Bronka Sundstrom 91 hiked unassisted from Paradise to Camp Muir and back to Paradise, an extraordinary achievement given her age and the difficulty of the climb. Her companion on the journey Darryl Abrahms also know by his trail name as “Sobo Hobo” asked her to wait so he could rest near Moon Rocks. “It was a tough and dangerous journey,” Darryl says, “and Bronka performed excellently.”

“We had a wonderful time,” Bronka says with a smile.
Bronka Sundstom is a legend at Mt. Rainier, being the oldest woman to summit the formidable peak, which she did at the age of seventy eight.

“We stopped several times so people could have their photo taken with her,” Darryl says.She is know as The Lady of the Mountain by the many people she has met on Mount Rainier. Bronka hiked over fifty times to Camp Muir in one season with her beloved husband Ake, now deceased.

Bronka is a concentration camp survivor, having endured the horrors of Bergen Belsen during the Second World War. She shows that not only can people survive unspeakable suffering, they can go on to achieve great things.
